Insights of Cognitive Linguistics for Foreign Language Instruction

The paper explores the insights of Cognitive Linguistics for foreign language instruction. The main points can be summarized as follows: The view of language itself determines the choice of instruction principles and methods; teachers play and L1 an important role in the efficiency of foreign language learning; and the way L1 works needs to be studied closely; the quantity and the way of inputing also affect the learning effect to a great extent; explicit teaching is still very important; form instruction, which helps to transform input into intake, should have its place in language instruction; linguistic chunks (or conventional expressions or conventional ways of expression) should be the main contents to be learned; learned chunks serve as a base for new learning and making generalizations about the linguistic system; Corpus-based methods will give more convincing evidence in the analysis of language acquisition data.
