STUDY ON ANTIFERTILITY ACTION OF MURRAYA PANICULATA EXTRACT

Murraya paniculata had a prominent effect of preventing implantation, terminating early pregnancy and mid-pregnancy of mice, but it could hardly prevent the transport of ova. The cortex of root and stem, leaf, branch, all had obvious action of antifertility. Among them, the cortex was the most effective, and the woody parts were less efficient than other parts. The effective dosage(the success rate termination of early pregnancy for mice is over 80%) of the boiled water extract of cortex and woody parts are 0.025 and 0.4g respectively (original herb/30g body weight). Owing to the different ways of administration, the antifertility action of murraya paniculata was quite different. The best way was intraperitoneal injection. While subcutaneous injection was not desirable, it was almost not effective to be given by oral administration. The boiled water extract of Murraya paniculata could obviously stimulate the contraction of isolated and intact mice uterus. When the extract of the cortex was used with PGE_2, they should have an evident enhancement of the contraction of mice uterus and the termination of early pregnancy. The LD_(50) of the cortex for mice was 14.14g/kg.
