Recent Advances on HPLC-MS in Quality Control of Propolis

Zhang Cuiping Liu Gang Hu Fuliang(College of Animal Sciences,Zhejiang University,Hangzhou 310058,China)
Propolis is a resinous hive product collected by honeybees from plants, showing a very complex chemical composition. Therefore, sensitive and comprehensive analytical techniques are needed to better understand the pharmacological basis of the propolis and to enhance the product quality control. The combined usage of high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) and mass spectrometry(MS) which has been proven to be a rapid and sensitive method to analyze the majority of many constituents in propolis, particularly for the detection of those present in minor or trace amounts.Such technology combines advantages such as high separating efficiency from HPLC and good sensitivity and strong selectivity from MS,This article briefly reviewed the applications of HPLC-MS in plant sources, the qualitative and quantitative analysis and chloramphenicol residues, offering reference for further application of HPLC-MS in propolis quality control.
