The effect of extracts from herba epimedii and semen cuscutae on thefunction of male reproduction

The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of Icariin(ICA,the maincomponent of herba epimedii)and extract of semen cuscutae(SCE)on the development of sex or-gans of immature male mice in vivo and on the functions of rat leydig cells in vitro. It was foundthat ICA increase significantly the weights of immature mice epidiermis and seminal vesicle. SCEhad the same effects on testis and epidiermis, but not so potent as hCG. In the culture medium ofadult rat leydig cells,ICA increased the basal testosterone(Ts)secreation and cAMP production. SCE enhanced basal and hCG-stimulated Ts secretion,The results suggest that ICA possesses anandrogen-like efffect and may increase Ts secretion through cAMP. SCE mainly acts like the go-nadotropic hOrmone.
