The Antitumor Activity of β-elemene Associates with Apoptosis

elemene is an element isolated from the Chinese medical herb Rhizomae. The effect of β-elemene on the growth of K 562 cells was evaluated by MTT Hoechst 33342 staining, PI staining and electromicroscopy as well as Flow Cytometry assay. The result showed that β-elemene significantly inhibited K 562 cells growth and that the IC50 values of β-elemene for K 562 cells was found to be 17.14 ug/ml. Its induction ratio of apoptosis was positively related with the concentration and the exposure time to β-elemene. The number of phase G 1 cell increased and S cell decreased which indicated that the induction of apoptosis was ascribed to mechanisms of antitumor activity of β-elemene.
