Study on serum MDA and SOD in patients with severely closed head injury treated with hyperbaric oxygenation

Objective To observe the changes of malon dialdehyde(MDA) and superoxide dismutase(SOD-1) metabolized from lipid peroxides(LPO) in serum of the patients with severely closed head injury at pre-, mid- and post-treatment of hyperbaric oxygenation(HBO).Methods Fifty patients were divided into two groups randomly.One was treated with HBO combined with conventional treatment(HBO group).The other was only treated with conventional treatment(control group).There were 30 healthy volunteers as the health group.Concentrations of MDA and SOD-1 were measured with spectrometry and radioimmunoassay respectively during the study.Results Before the treatment,the MDA of HBO and control group was respectively (5.27±1.59)μoml/L and (5.71±1.34)μmol/L; the SOD-1 wes separately (271.3± 102.9)μg/L and (256.3±112.4)μg/L.There wasn't significant difference (P0.05). These data were compared with the health group, there was a significant difference (P0.01).But there was a negative correlation between the MDA and SOD-1.After the treatment,the patients who had the enhancement of MAD and decrease of SOD-1 were less effects and bad prognosis.After the HBO treatment, the MDA was decreased to (4.11±0.35)μmol/L,the SOD-1 was raised to (380.5±115.3)μg/L.The effects were higher than the control group.Conclusion The changes of MDA and SOD-1 are related with the severity of brain injury.They can be used to judge the curative effect and the prognosis,and used as the basis of adjusting HBO treatment.
