Epidemiological survey on suicide rate of the elderly in rural area of Changsha

Objective The main purposes of this study are to collect the first-handed data on suicide rate of the elderly in rural communities to provide reliable scientific bases for preventing suicide of the elderly in rural area. Methods All 60-year-old or over elder people in 2 counties(Liuyang and Wangcheng) including 145 villages of 8 townships in Changsha, Hunan Province, who committed suicide from the year 1996 to 2000, were analyzed in this study. Results (1)Average standardized rate was 103.18 per 100 000 from 1996 to 2000 in two counties. There was no gender difference of suicide rate (P0.05). (2) Suicide was the first cause of accident death among the rural elderly (67.68%).(3)The suicide rate of Wangcheng County was demonstrated to have a linear ascending tendency by tendency test (P0.05). Conclusions Rural elderly is one of the groups that have high risk of committing suicide. Among the causes of rural elderly's accident death, suicide ranked the first.
