A probe into the influence of occupation on the quality of life in elderly

Objective To analyze comparatively the differences in the quality of life in elderly with different occupations. Methods Physical and psychological health conditions and adaptation to social roles in aged with different occupations before retirement were studied by household interviews. Results Physically, the prevalence of coronary heart disease in the elderly was higher in the administrators and the professionals than in the clerks and the workers, and the prevalence of dental problem was lower in workers than in other groups ( P 0 01). Psychologically, the professionals' health level was lower than other groups ( P 0 01). Socially, the ability of adjustment to social roles was lower in male workers than in the male administrators( P 0 05). Conclusions There are certain differences in the three dimensions of health in elderly. These differences are related to their original culture and occupational backgrounds. Thus, occupation is an important demographic and sociologic feature contributing to the quality of life in elderly.
