Neuropeptide Y: a possible factor enhancing diabetes onset in Chinese Hamster with psychological stress

Objective The mechanism of onset of overt diabetes mellitus that may be affected by environmental stress has not been fully clarified This research was to explore the possible factors that induced diabetes through the neuroendocrine mechanism with the psychological stress in Chinese hamster Methods 174 Chinese hamsters were randomly divided into two groups: stress group and control group Stress group was given circumgyration and shaking 10～15 minutes every day These hamsters were killed by breaking necks 1 year later The contents of neuropeptide Y (NPY) in hypothalamus and pituitary and blood insulin level were measured The Index of Insulin Resistant (IIR) was calculated Results The level of blood glucose, insulin, IIR and hypothalamus and pituitary, NPY in stress group were (5 00±0 08) mmol/L, (8 2±2 3) mU/L, (4 03±0 30)×10 -3 and (58 2±8 6) pg/mg protein respectively, and that in control group were (4 58±0 09) mmol/L, (17 1±3 8) mU/L, (3 12±0 28)×10 -3 and (35 6±5 5) pg/mg protein respectively The level of blood glucose, IIR and NPY in stress group was significantly higher than that in control group (P0 05) respectively, and the level of insulin in stress group was significantly lower than that in control group (P0 05) Correlation analyses showed that there was negative correlation between the level of blood insulin and the IIR (r=-0 457, P 0 01), so was between the IIR and the level of NPY (r=-0 320 P0 05) Conclusions The increasing of NPY in hypothalamus and pituitary is the possible factor through which the psychological stress induces the diabetes
