Physiological variation of androgens and 5α reductase activities in male foreskin at different development stage

Objective To study the physiological variation, as well as its significance, of androgens and 5α reductase activities in male individuals at different development stage. Methods The foreskins were acquried from 58 subjects, aged 9 months to 34 years. Testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels in these target tissues were measured by radioimmunoassay after homogenization, and the activities of 5α reductase isozyme I and II by the methods developed in our laboratory. Results The levels of T and DHT, and the activities of 5α reductase isozymes in target tissues remained low in children from 2 to 5 years of age. After 6 years of age these values would rise during the stages of pubertal development and reach new peaks at age of 14 to 16 years. After completion of pubertal development, 5α reductase and its catalyzing product DHT, as well as T itself, tended to keep at more stable and high levels. Conclusion ①5α reductase II activities are androgen dependent. ②Just as T itself, 5α reductase and DHT play important roles in male pubertal development and in maintenance of male sexual features.
