An result analysis for the second round of petroleum exploration in Bohai Bay

Petroleum exploration is a continuous process of repeated recognition and practice. Petroleum explorers would continuously deepen their recognition and expand the exploration effects, with the emergences of new concepts and technologies and the availability of more high-quality data. During the early exploration in Bohai Bay, some exploratory wells were not at the optimal locations due to limits of theoretical concept, technology and data, and thicker oil pays were not discovered timely to get commercial productivity because of inaccurate prediction of structure, reservoir and hydrocarbon migration and because of our backward testing technology. In recent years, however, a great number of large- and medium-sized oil and gas fields are discovered by a repeated analysis and pre-exploration. But limited data acquired in some exploratory wells has also resulted in wrong ideas from the repeated analysis, making the repeated exploration fail again in some cases. All theses experiences and lessons should be carefully summarized and learned, which are useful to directing further studies and offshore operations.
