The computerassisted area measurement of the brain volume on CT films in healthy aged individuals

Objective To understand the physiological changes of healthy aging brain,to supply the diagnosetic basis for the patients with dementia and to detect a practicable measuring method that can sensitively reflect the changes of the brain volume. Method We collected 81 brain CT films of the healthy elderly persons,put the brain CT films under the camera,input the pictures in the screen of the computer, set the size of the gauge and delimited the area of being measured with mouse. Results The area changes of the brain substances and the third ventricles were significant statistically (P0. 05). The changes of the indexes of supra sellar cisternfissures of sylvius and the lateral ventricles and the proportion of the brain stem to pon cistern were all significant statistically(P0.05). Conclusion There were obvious aged changes of the brain volumes including the cerebellum in healthy aged individuals.The changes of the ventricular areas, except the fouth ventricle, were more sensitive than those of the brain substances. It was suggestted that the indexes of the ventricular might serve as the more important observational indexes in the healthy aged individuals.
