Clinical application of chitosan for prevention of tendon adhesion

Objective To observe the clinical effect of chitosan on prevention of tendon adhesion in the tendon sheath. Methods Tenolysis was performed to 34 tendons of 26 cases. 2 % chitosan was injected intraoperatively into the tendon sheath of 19 tendons in 13 cases after tenolysis.The other 15 tendons of 13 cases without chitosan application served as controls. The patients were followed up for 5 months. The treatment outcome was evaluated according to TAM standard. Results In the chitosan treated group,the function of 17 tendons was rated as excellent or good.The excellent and good rate was 89.5 %, being significantly higher than that of the control group which was 60 % ( x 2 = 4.05, P 0.05 ). Conclusions Chitosan can prevent or reduce tendon adhesion.
