Treatment of closed mallet fingers with a new designed external fixator

Objective To introduce a new designed external fixator for treatment of closed mallet fingers. Methods The new designed external fixator is composed of two semicircular supporting splints with one lateral adjusting appliance. The DIP joints can be reliably fixed in extension or minor over extension by manual adjustment. Movement of the involved fingers can be performed during fixation period as well as when the fixator is removed after 6 to 8 weeks. From 1989 to 1996, 26 cases of closed mallet fingers were treated with this method. 25 patients were followed up for an average of 56 months (from 6 to 101 months). Results According to TAM criteria, the overall effective rate was 100The external fixator is simple, easily manipulated, and effective in clinic application.
