Expression of matrix metalloproteinase in human abdominal aortic aneurysm tissue

Objective To explore the production of matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) in human abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) tissue. Method In situ hybridization was applied to detect mRNA expression of interstitial collagenase (MMP-1 ) and gelatinase B (MMP-9) in the tissue sections of 20 cases of AAA and 4 cases of normal human aorta abdominalis. Result The expression of MMP-1 and MMP-9 was found in macrophages, smooth nuscle cells and lymphocytes, and the highest expression was in macrophages. Conclusion MMPs play vital important roles in the development and expansion of AAA. Inflammatory cells are mainly contribute to the production of MMPs and influence the expression of MMPs in interstitial cells.
