Analysis of resistance in staphylococcus aureus to eighteen antibiotics

Objective To acquire the information about the present resistance characteristics in Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), especially in methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and to instruct rational application of antibiotics clinically. Methods A total of 223 isolates of S. aureus were collected from infectious samples in Beijing Red Cross Chaoyang Hospital during June 1994 December 1995. The susceptibility testing and β lactamase determination were performed for each of the strains. The data from all of the tests were combined for analysis using WHONET 3 software. Results The ratio of MRSA to total S. aureus isolates was 58.3%. Determination of β lactamase production showed no significant differences between MRSA and methicillin susceptible staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). Both MRSA and MSSA were susceptible to Vancomycin. MRSA showed multiresistance to 15 of 18 antibiotics with rates ranging from 28% to 100%,and most of MSSA were only resistant to Penicillin G and Ampicillin. Conclusions It is necessary to distinguish MRSA and MSSA strictly. Vancomycin is the first choice antibiotics of MRSA infections. Dealing with MRSA should be emphasised.
