Studies on Combining Ability and Heritability of 8 Spike Characters in Indica Hybrid Rice

The correlation,combining ability and heritability of spike characters,which of 12 elite parents of three-line indica rice including 5 CMS lines and 7 restorers were analysed by way of 5×7 incomplete diallele cross(NCⅡ) design.The results showed:(1) Both the additive variation and the nonadditive variation were significant in all 8 spike characters(spike length(SL),panicle neck length(PNL),percentage of seed-setting(PSS),spikelet number/plant(SNP),number of seed/panicle(NSP),number of primary branch(NPB),secondary branch(NSB),1000-grain weight(TGW)).The additive variation was principal in SL,while the nonadditive variation was greater in NPB,NSB,TGW.(2) Most of 8 spike characters were influenced more greatly by CMS line than by restorer line, but there was a relatively great effect of restorer line on SL,SNP,PNL.(3) Based on the GCA effects and SCA variances of the parents,CMS line G46A and restorer Mianhui725 were recommendable.What~(,)s more,Minghui63 was a good restorer line in developing hybrid rice with late maturity.(4) There existed a positive correlation between GCA and phenotypic value of parents,which indicated that great attention must be paid on the improvement of parent own characters in hybrid rice breeding.(5)The broad heritability was orderred from high to low as TGW,PNL,SL,PSS,NSP,NPB,SNP,NSB.The narrow heritability was ordered from high to low as SL,PNL,PSS,SNP,NPB,NSP,NSB,TGW.
