The Effect of the Teaching of Conceptual Metaphors on the Acquisition of Argument Structure Constructions

QIAN Kun;School of Foreign Languages,Guangzhou College,South China University of Technology;
Taking 61 undergraduate students as the subjects,the present study investigates the effect of the teaching of conceptual metaphors on the acquisition of argument structure constructions illustrated by the double noun construction and the dative construction. The results show that in SLA,the teaching of conceptual metaphors contributes significantly to the acquisition of argument structure constructions,particularly when the meaning of the sentence hinges more on the argument in the sentence where it appears. This promotion could be attributed to the clarification of the inheritance networks of constructions and the improvement of the learners' metaphorical competence by the teaching. The study suggests that construction view be applied in SLA and conceptual metaphors be taught to help the learners match the forms and meanings of the target language so that they can perceive the world in the cognitive mode of the target language.
