Effects of Free Ammonia on Growth and Physiological Properties of Ceratophyllum demersum

Objective The effect of free nitrogen forms on growth and physiological index and mechanism of Ceratophyllum demersum were investigated to provide scientific basis for using Ceratophyllum demersum to improve water condition.Methods Using static laboratory experiment,the effect of free ammonia on height,biomass,livability,chlorophyll content,selective permeability of cell,O2·-production rate and SOD activity of Ceratophyllum demersum were investigated in different free ammonia Concentrations.Results It was the free ammonia not the total ammonia that inhibited the growth and physiological of Ceratophyllum demersum in water.The membrane permeabilities of Ceratophyllum demersum in high free ammonia treatments were much higher than those of other treatments.The O2·-production rate were sensitive to free ammonia and increased at first but decreased later under high free ammonia concentration.The activities of SOD decreased all the time under high concentration of free ammonia.Conclusion When the concentration of free ammonia is higher than 0.41mg/L,the growth is decreased.The free ammonia threshold is about 0.683mg/L~0.82mg/L for growing of Ceratophyllum demersum.
