Isolation and characterization of bacterium with ACC deaminase activity and its effect on salt tolerance of eggplant

A bacterium, named strain DW1 with 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase activity, was isolated from saline soil in Shangyu, Zhejiang Province. Based on the results of phenotypic features, phylogenetic similarity of 16S rDNA gene sequences, DNA G+C content, strain DW1 was identified as Pseudomonas sp. The response of eggplant seeds and seedlings treated with strain DW1 to salt stress was assessed. The results show that strain DW1 was capable of promoting eggplant seed germination percentage and seedling root elongation compared with control. Interestingly, the strain DW1 significantly increased the fresh weights of eggplant seedlings in saline soil and slightly influenced the uptake of calcium ions while reduced the uptake of sodium ions. This may suggest strain DW1 can increase resistance in eggplant to salt stress.
