The Characteristics of Roots and Their Relation to the Formation of Grain Yield under the Cultivation by System of Rice Intensification (SRI)

The characteristics of roots and their relation to the formation of grain yield under the cultivation by the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) were studied, using the highyielding hybrid rice combination Xieyou 527 as the material. The results showed that compared with the traditional cultivation (check), SRI increased markedly the root dry weight per plant in the whole growing period from tillering to ripening stage, decreased the soluble sugar content of roots after full heading stage and increased the physiological activity and phosphorus content of roots in late growth stage. Especially, the bleeding intensity of root system of SRI was obviously higher than that of the traditional cultivation in grainfilling stage. Therefore, SRI can delay the aging of roots and leaves in late growth stage, increase seedsetting percentage and grain weight and finally raise grain yield.
