The Great AChievements of Hybrid Rice in Thirty Years and Its Further Developing Strategies in China

In China, the history of hybrid rice has been 30 years since the research on hybrid rice initiatedby Prof. Yuan Longping in l964. Inthe past 30 years, great achievements have been made in hybrid ricedevelopment. Since the successful development of WA- type CMS lines and their hybrid varieties, about 600pairs of A and B lines with more than 60 types of cytoplasm have been bred by means of distant crossings,ge-ographically- distant or different ecotypic intervarietal hybridizations and induced mutations, more than 3000R lines have been screened out and developed , and nearly 200 hybrid combinations have been released; theyield of hybrid seed production has been increased from only tens of kilogrammes per hectare at the very earlybeginning to above 4.5t/ha in a large scale at present, with the highest seed yield of 7. 386t/ha created in asmall plot in l993. From l976 to l993, the accumulated planted area of hybrid rice was up to l60. 2 millionhectares with the yield increased from 4.2t/ha to 6.6t/ha, generally l.5t/ha higher than that of convention-al rice; the total increased paddy by it was about 24 million tons. Because of the great contribution to foodproduction for hybrid rice, Prof. Yuan, along with his coworkers,was awarded the first China’s Special-classInvention Prize in 1981. Subsequently, Prof.Yuan has been given four internatinal prizes. In the paper,thestrategies for the development of hybrid rice were also discussed.
