Features of neurological injuries after chronic mercury intoxication

Objective To investigate the clinical features of neurological injuries after chronic mercury intoxication. Methods Retrospective studies the clinical data in 10 cases that were diagnosed of chronic mercury intoxication. Results 7 cases contacted with mercury by taking a folk prescription of traditional Chinese medicine for curing psoriasis or epilepsy,1 case applying hair conditioner,1 case gold panning,1 vocational contact.The central nerve system impaired was found in 7 patients and their notable symptoms were excitation,irritation,memory impairment and mental disorders.Symptom of peripheral nerve disease was complained by 8 cases.Conclusions Chronic mercury can result in serious central and peripheral nerve injuries.It is helpful to treat with mercury expellant as earlier as possible.
