The research progress on the role of odontoblast in pulp immune response

Meng Runsha;Xu Qiong;Guanghua School of Stomatology,Hospital of Stomatology,Sun Yat-sen University,Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Stomatology;
As characteristic cells in pulp-dentin complex,the main functions of odontoblasts arethe synthesis,extracellular deposition,and mineralization of collagen-rich matrix to form the dentin tissue.Recent studies have indicated that the odontoblasts may have functioned not only as dentinogenesis,butalso as first cells encountered by pathogens. When encountered to pathogens invalided by caries,odontoblasts identify pathogen-associated molecular patterns via pattern recognition receptors and startimmune defense response. This article reviews the histophysiological characteristics of odontoblasts andtheir functions in the immune response of pulpitis.
