Boronate affinity chromatography of antibiotics I. Study on the possibility of complexation of erythromycin and kanamycin with boric acid

The possibilities of boric acid with kanamycin or erythromycin to form specific complex was studied. The degree of the complexation was determined by the conductivity method, 11 B NMR and the adsorption onto the prepared boronate affinity gel. Results showed that in the case of compound bearing a cis 1,2 diol group like kanamycin. It could be efficiently complexed with boron and could be purified by bornate affinity chromatography; while not in the case of erythromyeim,due to lack of the necessary reactive complexation group.
