Distribution and pharmacokinetics after intravenous injection of ciprofloxacin in the rabbit eye

To study the blood or intraocular distribution and pharmacokinetics of intravenously administered ciprofloxacin in rabbits′ eyes. The blood or intraocular concentrations of ciprofloxacin were measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The peak concentrations ( C max ) of ciprofloxacin in lachrymal fluid, cornea, aqueous humor, iris ciliary body, lens, vitreous body were (8.92±2.88), (142.84±25.02), (11.06±2.80), (99.32±10.60), (30.28±1.91) and (8.10±1.71)μg/ml(μg/g) respectively. The half life ( T 1/2β ) of various concentration in blood, lachrymal fluid, cornea, aqueous humor, iris ciliary body, lens and vitreous body was (1.21±0.23), (1.48±0.97), (1.66±0.13), (2.01±0.51), (1.52±0.92), and (1.21±0.66)h, respectively. Results indicate that ciprofloxacin can penetrate various intraocular tissues.
