Simulation study on CO_2 mass transfer rate of anodic bubbles and its effect on current efficiency in aluminum electrolysis

The coupled mass transfer model for CO2 bubbles growth at the aluminum electrolytic anode and floating of the bubbles which escaped from the bottom of the anode was constructed.The mass transfer rate of CO2 bubbles and its effect on the secondary aluminum loss reaction was investigated.The calculated results show that mass transfer rate in bubbles' growing process about 10-6 mol/s is more than floating process about 10-8-10-9 mol/s.When mass transfer rate of gases is close to loss rate of aluminum,current efficiency(CE)doesn't change remarkably with the anode and cathode distance(ACD)descending.But current density(i)has pronounced influence on the mass transfer rate in growing process.When i increases from 0.15 to 0.75A/cm2,mass transfer rate is up to 1.96×10-6 mol/s,but i is bigger,aluminum generates more,so loss of CE caused by CO2 mass transfer decreases.When ultrasound is loaded on the anode,the size of the bubbles escaping from the anode is smaller,but the residence time for CO2 bubbles underneath the anode is shortened,and CE is improved about 2% by combined effects.The calculated results are consistent with experimental results in giving condition.
