Simulating the boundary of forest and grass on the Loess Plateau based on random forest model

To quantitatively describe the boundary line of forest and grass on the Loess Plateau,a random forest model was establishedby using the remaining forest and grass vegetation data and 13 climatic factors.The results show that the random forest models have good performance in prediction,and the detection average accuracy is about 89.7%.Moisture related factors play more important role than thermal related factors in determining the boundary of forest and grass on the Loess Plateau.The boundary line of forest and grass locates atTianshui-Pingliang-Xifeng-Yanan-Lishi-Taiyuan-Yangquan with the annually average precipitation of 517 mm,precipitation of driest month of 3 mm,and annual range of temperature of 38.0 ℃.The obtained random forest model could be used in predicting the boundary shift of forest and grass under future climate change scenarios on the Loess Plateau.Our study provides a reference for vegetation restoration and construction on the Loess Plateau.
