The Effect of Biofeedback Assisted Relaxation Training on Glucose Metabolism in Patients with Type Ⅱ Diabetes: A Follow-up Study

ZHU Xiong-zhao, GONG Yao-xian,YAO Shu-yao,et al Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University,Changsha 410011,China
Objective:To investigate the effect of biofeedback assisted relaxation training on blood glucose metabolism in patients with type Ⅱdiabetes. Methods: The patients were randomized to relaxation training group or control group. The control group (n=73) was treated with conventional therapies. The relaxation training group (n=55) received biofeedback assisted relaxation training in addition to conventional therapies. Serum fasting blood glucose(FBS) and post-prandial two hours blood glucose level(2PBS) Glycosylated hemoglobin(HbA1c) were evaluated at pretreatment and during follow-up. Pre- and post-three-prandial one hour blood glucose were measured before the treatment and at the tenth, twentieth and thirtieth day after treatment. Results: ① All patients demonstrated significant improvement in FBS, 2PBS and the mean of blood glucose at one month after treatment, and the HbA1c at two month after treatment, but the degree of improvement was significantly greater in relaxation training group than in control group. The fluctuating range of blood glucose per day was significantly smaller in the training group. ② There were no group differences during follow-up 8 months in physiological variables. ③ For the group that received relaxation training, the frequency of practice relaxation during follow-up was associated with greater improvement in glucose metabolism. The patients who persisted in practice relaxation demonstrated significant improvement in FBS, 2PBS and HbA1c throughout 8 months, but those who practice relaxation less during follow-up did not show significant improvement in glycemic control. ④ The improvement in glucose metabolism was negatively correlated with extent of relaxation. Conclusion: The biofeedback assisted relaxation training could be a useful adjunctive treatment for reducing blood glucose in the type Ⅱ diabetes. The extent and frequency of relaxation affect the effect of biofeedback assisted relaxation training on glucose metabolism.
