The Effect of Social Support on Type II Diabetes with Depression

Objective:To investigate the prevalence of d epression in type II diabetes and to study the effect of social support on depre ssive symptoms and glucose metabolism. Met hods:one hundred type II diabetes and one hundred healthy controls were assessed wit h the Self-reporting Depression Scale (SDS).Fifty nine type Ⅱ diabeties with d epressiv e symptoms were randomly assigned to the experimental group or the control grou p.The experimental g roup received social support intervention for 3 months in addition to conven tional therapies ,whereas the control group was treated with con ventional therapies.Serum fasting blood glucose, postprandial blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA 1c), TC,TG,LDL,fasting insulin were evaluated before and after treatment. Rusults: The ratio of depression was higher in subjects with Type II diabetes than in healthy controls.The depressive symptoms were significantly improved in the exp erimental group.Conclusion:Soc ial support interventiion helps to improve glucose metabolism and depression in Type Ⅱ diabetis.
