Validity and Reliability of the Trait Sympathy Scales in Chinese College Students

Objective: To test the psychometric properties of the Trait Sympathy Scales(TSS) in Chinese college teachers. Methods: A total of 660 college teachers were investigated with a wide survey including TSS and the criterion measures. A test-retest evaluation was undertook in 50 participants after 8 weeks. Results: The results of confirmatory factor analyses supported the bi-factor exploratory structural equation model, and the TSS met the bi-factor structure, namely including a general sympathy factor and two special domains(Sympathy for the Disempowered and Sympathy for the Feelings of Others). The TSS score was positively correlated with empathic concern, the measure of sympathy score, affective empathy, cognitive empathy and altruistic behavior(r=0.58, 0.62, 0.29, 0.33, 0.36, respectively). Reliability analyses revealed that the TSS had high homogeneity coefficient(0.70) and composite reliability(0.90), and an acceptable test-retest reliability(r=0.54~0.72). It is meaningful to report the total TSS score, the subscale scores of Sympathy for the Disempowered and Sympathy for the Feelings of Others. Conclusion: In conclusion, the Chinese version of the TSS has sound validity and reliability among Chinese college students.
