Intergenerational Transmission of Executive Function:The Moderating Effects of Gender and Family Socioeconomic Status

Objective: To examine the intergenerational transmission of executive function(EF) and whether the gender of parent and child or family socioeconomic status(SES) could moderate this transmission. Methods: Totally 309 preschoolaged children and their parents participated in this study. Paternal and maternal EF were assessed by Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult Version and child EF was assessed by mother-report using Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Preschool Version. Results:(1)Maternal EF was significant in predicting both boys' and girls' EF,while paternal EF was only significant in predicting girls' EF;(2)The moderating effects of SES in the transmission of EF was significant for mothers but not for fathers. Specifically, maternal EF positively predicted boys' EF in low-SES families but not in high-SES families. Conclusion: EF may be transmitted from parents to child, and the strength of transmission varied by the gender of parent and child and family socioeconomic status.
