Investigation on Cognition to Harm of Smoking and Attitude to Ban-smoking of Residents in Henan

Objective To understand the knowledge and attitudes toward ban-smoking in public places among residents in Henan Province.Methods With 4-stage stratified and cluster sampling method,2 056 residents aged 15 to 69 yrs were selected from Henan province and they were investigated with household survey from August 2010 to late September 2010.Results The overall smoking rate in subjects was 21.11%.78.34% of the smokers and 79.35% of the non-smokers knew smoking can cause serious diseases.39.93%,40.95% and 78.06% of the subjects knew smoking can cause stroke,heart attacks and lung cancer,respectively.11.38% of subjects considered the marked low-tar cigarettes had smaller health hazard than the average cigarettes did.36.58% of the subjects strongly agreed on completely ban-smoking and no smoking indoors in public places,and the attitude to it was significantly different between smokers and non-smokers(χ2=92.01,P0.05).Conclusion Most residents are lack of the knowledge about the hazards of smoking and their attitude toward smoking ban in public places is not strong enough.It is necessary to improve their knowledge on this aspect through health education and strive for their full support of smoking ban in public places.
