Focused on the structure characteristics and the flaws of existing studies of rigid-flexible composite pavement, the theories of damage mechanics, fracture mechanics and simulation method were used to analyze the fatigue damage characteristics, cracking mechanism and crack propagation of the asphalt concrete layer under load, and entity engineerings were observed and analyzed. The results show that the asphalt concrete layer of which is on the side of load and at the joints(cracks) of rigid base is prone to fatigue cracking under repeated load, the crack tip is under tensile stress after cracking, cracks propagate upward along crack tip.The fatigue life of the asphalt concrete layer under load increases continuously with the increase of modulus of joint. The damage of the asphalt concrete layer increases continuously with the increase of modulus of asphalt concrete layer, the damage value of the asphalt concrete layer decreases continuously with the increase of modulus of soil base.Propagation strength of reflective crack in the asphalt concrete layer increases with crack propagation, and the increase is significantly larger in crack propagation later than previous.Increasing thickness of the asphalt concrete layer can postpone reflective crack propagation. The propagation strength of reflective crack in the asphalt concrete layer increases linearly with the increase of modulus of asphalt concrete layer, but the increase is not large. The results are of great significance in rational design and popularization and application of rigid-flexible composite pavement.
