Effect of Different Irrigation Amounts on Crop Water Consumption and Grain Yield of Spring Maize(Zea mays)

Soil water contents in oasis spring maize field are monitored continuously by using soil neutron probe combined with drying-weighing method,and the temporal and spatial variations of soil moisture at various growth stages are analyzed.Meanwhile,the effects of different irrigation amounts on periodic water consumption and its percentage in the total water use of maize,leaf area index,and grain yield are explored.The results indicate that profile soil water contents in various increments varied similarly with maize growth under different irrigation amounts,but the spatial variation of soil moisture is quite different,revealing an obvious hierarchy dynamics among soil increments.The periodic water consumption and its percentage in total water use both increases initially then followed by a decrease as maize grew,with the maximum both valued in silking to grain filling.In addition,leaf area indexes are greatly improved under full irrigation before maize filling,and grain yield is not reduced under reasonable limited water management with respectively 102 mm water application during maize jointing,93 mm during 11-leaf stage,93 mm during booting,90 mm during heading,90 mm during silking,75 mm during early filling and 75 mm during middle filling,contrarily,significant water-saving and yield increase has been achieved.
