THE THEORY AND METHOD OF IDEAL PLANT MORPHOLOGY IN RICE BREEDING

In recent years, based on our experience of high production, we have concentrated our efforts on the ideal plant morphology of rice in relation to (1) fertilizer tolerance and lodging resistance, (2) biological yield and (3) the ratio of grain to plant.Since the grain yield of rice depends principally on the photosynthesis after heading, it can be easily understood that the light transmission after heading is of great importance and that the rate of dry matter accumulation after heading is closely related to the morphology of the plant.In order to increase the rice yield it is necessary to further raise the utilization of light energy and, therefore, better external morphology and stronger physiological function are required. Since the chlorophyll content,net photosynthesis and longivity of leaves,which are responsible for the efficiency of light energy utilization, are intimately associated with the morphological characters, the breeding of ideal plant morphological of rice should be considered as a practical way of high-lightenergy-utilization breeding method as well as an important progress in conventional breeding method of rice.Some new lines released from our college and other institutes have attained as high as 1,200 or more jin per mu. We believe that it is quite feasible that for highly productive areas in our country, a 200 to 300 jin per mu increase in yield could be expected on a large scale. Thus, rice breeders of all regions must seek for a sweeping change in the methodology of breeding.
