PRELIMINARY STUDIES ON THE EVALUATION OF SALT TOLERANCE IN SOYBEAN VARIETIES

Shao Guihua (Institute of Crop Breeding and Cultivation, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing) Song Jingzhi (Institute of Crop Germplasm Resources, Cuinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing)  
Near 2000 soybean varieties were evaluated for their responses to salinized soil during germinating, seedling and flowering and pod-filling periods from 1983 to 1985. Only 6 varieties were found to be highly tolerant to salt in the whole growing season. There were 415 verieties proved to be tolerant to salt in verious growing stages, in which 37 were highly tolerant to salt in both the germination and seedling periods.Results for three years indicated that different varieties and different growing stages in the same variety showed different responces to salinity. There was no apparent relation in the salt tolerance of a variety among different growing stages. Some varieties exhibited high salt tolerance during the germinating stage hut might be susceptible in the seedling stage. Tolerance to salt in the growing stages after seedling was getting higher: Varieties with high salt tolerance under the condition of salinized soil were selected for breeding purpose.
