THE CLASSIFICATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF WILD BARLEY IN TIBET AUTONOMOUS REGION

This paper reported the results of 4 years exploration on wild barley germplasm resources with close affinity in Tibet. Their classification, distribution and morphological characters as well as the historical process of their discovery were described.The samples of wild barley collected were classified into 1 species, 2 subspecies and 48 varieties. Among which, 38 were new varietiesand 16 of which have been re -The wild barley in Tibet was characterized by its wide and overlapped distribution for most of the varieties, and the high frequencies of dominant genes governing their main hereditary characters (70% of collected samples were darkcoloures types). The Tibetan two-rowed wild barley was distinguished from the Israeli two-rowed wild barley by its esterease isozyme zymogram bandings, springness and winterness, and the length of pubescences on the rachilla. Archaeological evidence showed that Tibet had a 4000-5000 years history of agricultural activities, suggesting that the Qiughai-Xizang Plateau was the original centre of the Chinese cultivated barley and one of the original centres of wild barley.These precious wild barley germplasm resources were considered to be of great importance in the study of the origin, evolution, genetics and breeding of barley as well as excellent materials for teaching.
