Advances in Quantitative Genetics——TL Mapping and Its Application

The latest progress of quantitative genetics in plant crops is outlined. The advent of saturated genetic maps consisting of neutral and codominant DNA molecular markers has made feasible the resolution of a quantitative trait into multiple QTLs. So far the genetic maps of the QTLs for many important traits (such as yield, quality and resistance to diseases and pests, etc. ) in more than 20 crops have been constructed. The information revealed by a QTL mapping includes; (1) How many QTLs are involved in a quantitative trait under consideration? (2) Where are those QTLs located on the chromosomes? (3) Of what magnitudes are their individual and combined contributions to the trait expression? These QTL mappings revise some unadvisable assumptions and conclusions in traditional quantitative genetics, and provide new strategies for plant breeding.
