Effects of Nitrogen Applying Stage on Both Sucrose Synthesis in Flag Leaves and Cleavage in Grains of Wheat

The effects of a nitrogen applying stage on both sucrose synthesis in flag leaves and cleavage in grains of wheat were studied by using HPLC and enzymological methods. The results showed that the activities of sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) and sucrose synthase (SS) and the content of sucrose in flag leaves were significantly improved by applying nitrogen at the jointing stage. Improved SS activity and starch content in grains, provided the bases for achieving a grain yield of 9365.58 kg/ha. Both sucrose synthesis in flag leaves and cleavage in grains was partially inhibited by applying nitrogen fertilizer at the "getting up" stage or anthesis stage. As a result, the grain yield decreased significantly. The effect of the nitrogen applying stage on the activity of SPS corresponded to photosynthesis in flag leaves while the activity of SS corresponded to starch content in grains.
