Interactions of Water Management and Nitrogen Fertilizer on Nitrogen Absorption and Utilization in Rice

The interactions of water management and nitrogen fertilizer on nitrogen absorption and utilization in ricewere studied using Wuxiangjing9 (Japonica) as matarials. The results showed that N uptake and the remains of N in strawincreased with increasing nitrogen, and the percentage of nitrogen transported from vegetative organs, nitrogen utilizationefficiency (NUE) and nitrogen efficiency for grain production (NEGP) decreased. Under serious water stress N uptake andNEGP decreased. However, moderate water stress have no influence on N uptake, but increased the percentage of nitrogentransported from vegetative organs, and thus increasing NUE and NEGP. There was an obvious interaction betweennitrogen fertilizer and water management. With increasing water stress, the effects of nitrogen on increasing N uptakedecreased and that on decreasing NUE intensified. The results indicate that NUE and yield can be increased and N loss canbe decreased by moderate water stress.
