Analysis of Seed and Maternal Genetic Effects on the Contents of Seven Essential Amino Acids in Two rowed Barley

Half diallel crosses with seven parents of two rowed barley(Hordeum distichum L.) were conducted in two years to analyze the seven essential amino acid contents in kernels of parents and their F 2s, by using a new genetic model based on generation means of triploid endosperm quantitative characters. The results indicated that the contents(%) of all the 7 essential amino acids (including Lys, Thr, Val, Met, Phe and Leu) except isoleucine were controlled by maternal genetic effects as well as by seed direct genetic effects. Seed direct additive and maternal dominance effects constituted major part of genetic effects for lysine, threonine and methionine contents, whereas seed direct additive and dominance effects formed the main part in the inheritance of phenylanaline. Valine, leucine and isoleucine contents were mainly controlled by seed direct dominance effects. Moreover, all the essential amino acids, except valine, were significantly affected by direct dominance effects×environment interaction. The results also showed that there was a highly positive genetic covariance between seed direct additive and maternal additive effects for lysine content with a high heritability ( 2 O + 2 M =55.6%),indicating effectiveness of direct selection for this trait in progenies from cross. Parent Ris Φ 1508, due to its high content of Lys, Thr and Val in addition to obviously positive predicted values of direct additive effects and maternal additive effects, was more suitable than other parents for improving Lys content of barley. In addition, seed and maternal parents had insignificant heterosis effects on the seven amino acid contents in F 2s。
