Heterotic Grouping of 15 Maize Inbreds with RAPD Markers

Heterotic groups were classified by cluster analysis with RAPDs based on 15 maize inbreds utilized widely in hybrid maize production in China. Six primers, E 17, G 14, F 14, N 18, N 06 and G 04, selected from 105 candidate primers act as polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers for 15 inbred lines. Genetic distance among 15 inbreds was calculated and clustered with RAPD markers. The results showed that 15 inbred lines could be classified into six groups. Group I consisting of Zhonghuang204, Guan 17 and Mo17, is included in the Lancaster heterotic group. GroupⅡ, Consisting of D Huang 212, Huangzaosi and Wenhuang, is included in the Sipingtou heterotic group. GroupⅢ consisting of B37, B73 and B84, is included in the Reidyellowdent heterotic group. GroupⅣ consisting of Lü9, E28 and Dan340, is included in the Lüdahonggu heterotic group. GroupⅤ contains 5003 and 478, and GroupⅥ contains Zi 330. The six groups classified by cluster analysis with RAPD markers is consistent with the expected grouping based on available pedigree. The current study indicated that it is practical to group maize inbred lines with RAPDs.
