Establishment of Sesame Germplasm Core Collection in China

4251 Sesame (Sesame indicum L.) germplasm accessions collected, evaluated and catalogued in China were divided into 14 groups according to their origin, varietal type and ecotype. Based on the results from cluster analysis of 14 characters with random small sample by computerization, ward method was chosen as the best one for establishing sesame core collection. By application of ward method, 884 accessions were selected as precore collection through intragroup cluster analysis combining random selection with preselected proportion of 20% in the whole collections. Representational tests showed that preselected core covered genetic diversity of the whole collection by comparison of 6 values including Max, Min, Range, Mean, SD,CV of 14 characters analyzed. The preselected core was grown at 3 different ecological locations for investigation of agronomic traits from 1995~1996. It was found that the coincidance rate was 97.85% between 6 quality characters investigated in field tests and the original data. Significant positive correlations were also found between field investigation results and the original data for 3 quantitative characters including growth period, 1000seed weight and plant height. Final selection was carried out in group 6 and 7 in 1997. In representational test of final core collection, mean value coincidance rate was more than 97% and standard deviation coincidance rate was more than 90% in all 14 characters measured. Therefore, preselected sesame core collection was well representated by the final core selection.
