Objective To investigate the effect of embolectomy in middle stage of acute arterial obstruction(AAO) of lower extremities. Methods Clinical data of Fogarty catheter embolectomy for 24 AAO(27 limbs) with a course of 4～90 days in recent 5 years were studied retrospectively. Results Of 24 patients, 2 died and 22 survived after operation. Of the 22 survivors(24 limbs), the embolectomy succeeded in saving limb in 16 limbs without gangrenc before the operation; there were 8 limbs with gangrene, 3 with lower extremity amputation, 2 with toe amputation and 3 with suberustal healing before the operation. Conclusions Once AAO is diagnosed, operation should be done as soon as possible. The long illness course is not a contraindication of surgical treatment. The prognosis is related to the ischemia degree of lower extremity.
