Features of early Miocene large paleolakes in the interior of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and their tectonic significance

The deposits of the lower Miocene Wudaoliang Group and its equivalent Formations, which dip gently or subhorizontally, are distributed widely above the Oligocene planation surface in the interior of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. They are 300-350 m thick and rich in dolomitic limestone and marlstone, indicating a long-continued, stable lacustrine depositional environment in the early Miocene. According to the distribution of the lacustrine deposits of the Wudaoliang Group, it is inferred that there occurred paleolake basins each with an area of 5000-15000 km2 between the Tanggula Mountains and Kunlun Mountains, e.g. the Wudaoliang, Beiluhe, Tuotuohe, Tongtianhe and East Wenquan paleolake basins, and that lake basins larger than 1500-2000 km2 in area, e.g. the Amdo, Nagqu, Lhomar, Bangkog, Lunpola and Shuanghu lake basins, are identified between the Gangdise-Nyainqêntanglha mountains and the Tanggula Mountains. ETM remote sensing and field observations show that water passages existed between major early Miocene paleolake basins, forming still larger paleolakes, including the western Qinghai paleolake with an area of over 100000 km2 on the north side of the Tanggula Mountains and the northern Tibet paleolake with an area of over 50000 km2 on the south side of the Tanggula Mountains. The ages of these early Miocene paleolakes range from 23.5Ma to 16.0 Ma.
