An exploration to the theory and methodology of Late Cenozoic geological mapping

In this paper we first reviewed the history, present situation, and problems of China′s geological mapping (mainly medium-scale geological mapping) and then on the basis of characteristics of Late Cenozoic strata and our experience long accumulated in the study of geomorphology and Quaternary geology and in the mapping practice, we proposed several suggestions on enhancing the quality of and quickening the pace of large-scale geological mapping which is being and will be performed in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its adjacent areas. We believe that recognition of the basic characteristics of Late Cenozoic strata is a base of enhancing the mapping quality; interpretation of topographic maps and remote sensing images are important means to determine the genetic type and distribution of Late Cenozoic strata. In order to establish the sequence of mapping units, attention should be paid to the important role that relative height plays in dividing of Late Cenozoic strata. Moreover, the dialectical relation between the isotopic dating and the stratigraphic sequence identifying should be stressed: it is like the relation between the imperial crown and jewels on it. We believe that only by strengthening the communication between the study of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau uplifting and Late Cenozoic strata mapping could make their mutual support and improvement possible.
