From "Gezhi" to "Science"

Fan Hongye
The word 格致(Gezhi) in the ancient Chinese writing is not the equivalent of the modern word 科学(Kexue) (science). The latter is a new word appeared only in the modern history as a result of China's opening to the outside world and constant impact of the Western culture.格物知致(Ge Wu Zhi Zhi) was originally a component part of Confucianists' moral cultivation. In the late Ming Dynasty,Xu Guangqi for the first time put forward 格物穷理(Ge Wu Qiong Li) under the influence of the Western science. Since the Westernization Movement in the late Qing dynasty, the word Gezhi gradually became accepted by the Chinese intellectuals with, however, various explanations. Kang Youwei was the first to introduce from the Japanese the word Kexue (science). Later, Yan Fu et al. popularized the the use of word. After the 1911 Revolution, Gezhi was no longer used because a new educational system was implemented. Meanwhile the word "science" remained with two explanations.
