THE TRANSMUTATION OF THE NATIONALISM IN THE EARLY-QING DYNASTY AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE ASTRONOMY-MATHEMATICS OF THE QING DYNASTY

Liu Dun
In the early-Qing dynasty, the nationalism which originated in the adherents ofthe Ming dynasty had transmuted, because both the rulers and the intellectuals neededto extend the traditional concept of "the defence between the savages and the Chinese"(夷夏之防). This fact deeply influenced the astronomy-mathematics of the wholeQing dynasty. This paper investigates various changes of astronomy-mathematics inthis period caused by the transmutation. In particular, it gives tentative comments onsome historic facts, including the prosperity of the theory of "the Western learningoriginated from China" (西学中源), the appearance of some books of astronomy-mathematics written by imperial orders, the efforts of formalization made by somefamous scholars, the origins of the doctrine of "the Chinese essence and the Westernapplication" (中体西用) in the astronomy-mathematics. Meanwhile, the author alsotries to analyse the role of astronomy-mathematics in the intellectual history of theQing dynasty.
