THE THEORY OF COSMIC EXPASION IN ANCIENT CHINA

Chen Meidong
In 1304, Lin Yuan set forth in an artitle entitled Yuan Qi Shuo the theory that all things in the universe originated from a tiny drop of Yuan Qi, which gradually spread into Hun Dun with a diametre of 100 li, that then the Hun Dun got broken by expansion and formed the heaved and the earth, and that afterwards the heaven extended outside and the earth thickened periodically in a cycle of 10,800 years. This is a simple, reflective and brilliant theory of ancient China about the expansion of the universe.
